Getting Closer

Today, we had a little of everything, weather-wise. Calm, sunny, cloudy, heavy snow, you name it. It's nice to have the sun up (most days) when the alarm goes off, and the daylight lasts until something that resembles evening.

Postponed

Looking through some photos from last summer, I was reminded to check the date for this year's circus parade. After doing some research, it looks like there will not be on this year.

Game Time

Tonight, I was at the University School of Milwaukee, where the host Wildcats Girls Hockey team hosted the Cougars from Sun Prairie. USM won the game 4 to 1, and advances to the State Tournament in Madison next week.

Summer Nights

Today's news brought an announcement of another headliner coming to Summerfest in June - ZZ Top will open for Tom Petty on Friday the 25th. That got me looking through the photos from last year, and finding these two couples standing on the picnic tables watching the fireworks.

Lake Effect

A sudden storm blew in off the lake this afternoon, bringing with it heavy snow, including a stretch where we got about 3 inches in a half hour. Pretty, yes, but it was still a chore to clean up.

Think Green

Housed in the former Grand Avenue Congregational Church, the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center opens its doors for a number of Irish music and dance events each month. With St. Patrick's day about 3 weeks away, it's time to start thinking green!

Dark Alleys

Our team was last to finish at our bowling league tonight, and they were turning off the lights as we were cleaning up. I grabbed a quick shot of the lanes on the way out, and took some artistic license with it when I got home.

Footbridge

This footbridge allows pedestrians an elevated view of the McKinley Marina. The snow and ice are quickly disappearing, giving way to open water and hopes of getting out on the lake again soon.

Not An Olympic Sport

At a recent Admirals game, the between-periods entertainment featured a contest where the participants had to roll a football down the ice with their noses. I'm not sure if the contestants enjoyed it, but it was fun to watch.

Hop Crest

This Blatz crest atop one of the former brewery's buildings shows a large hop topped by a sheaf of wheat.

Carry-Ins

Yesterday, the Governor signed a new law, entitling attendees to carry in alcohol to gatherings at public parks, such as this concert at Pere Marquette last year. The decision to allow carry-ins is up to the organization holding the event, and some summer concert series have already announced their intention to disallow the practice.

P & C

Today and tomorrow, Brewers pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in Arizona. There are something like 15 pitchers on the training roster, so there will be a lot of picking and choosing to do between now and the beginning of April. Among the competitors is Jeff Suppan, shown in today's photo, taken last year at the team facility in Maryvale.

Birthday (Cup)cake

Sandy Ploy is the hostess of Iron Cupcake Milwaukee, and her birthday was this past weekend. In celebration, some friends from a bakery in Chicago brought her this wonderful cake, full of decorations related to the competition. Sandy is also competing in Kelly Ripa's Cake Off for a Cause. If you swing by and vote for Sandy's cake, one dollar for each vote will go towards breast cancer research.

Iron Cupcake - Bacon

Tonight, we went with some friends to the Harley Museum for this month's Iron Cupcake: Milwaukee competition. The theme was "Bacon Love" - each cupcake had some sort of bacon in it, and Nueske's was there, cooking up and handing out free samples of their bacon. We had a great time, and I'm sure we'll be back again. The required ingredient for next month is Curry - that should make for some unique treats!

The rooftop of the Pabst Theater, as seen through one of the arches at City Hall. The ornaments on top of the Pabst give indications of its use as a space for musical and other live performances.

Citius, Altius, Fortius

The speedskaters that have been training at the Pettit Center are in Vancouver and competing in their races. Good luck to all the athletes... we are proud of you!

Palms Up

The recent snow was nice, but the winter drags on, offering an occasional sunny day and getting our hopes up for an early spring. Whenever we need a taste of warmth, we can always head to the Domes and spend some time in the Tropical dome.

Cornice

The snow on our roof has transformed into a rather large overhang over the sidewalk. I ventured underneath to take this photo, looking up at the night sky. It will be interesting to see how large the icicles can get before the whole thing comes crashing down.

Drive Thru Valentine

My wife likes to call me "Procrastinator Man". If I were going to get her flowers for Valentine's Day, I might be headed over to Drive Thru Valentine, which is open tomorrow through Sunday at State Fair Park. The folks from Locker's Florist and Ultimate Confections have teamed up to provide one-stop service for both Romeos and Juliets this weekend.

Outside the Window

The snowfall started early this morning, and continued throughout the day. The snow accumulates on the picture window, both obscuring and enhancing the winter scene outside.

Wires

The folks at Cafe Hollander are into bikes, and have integrated them into the decor. This wheel is against a metal screen on the second floor of the Downer Street location, and the spokes of the wheel against the mesh make an eye-catching pattern.

Diagram

Over at Best Place, the banquet room has paintings around the top of the room that illustrate the brewing process, as well as the area around the old Pabst brewery. This panel, painted in the 1940's, shows the grain elevators, malting rooms, drying kilns, and start of the combination of ingredients and water.

Bridge Light

On the bridges over the river, the piers have warning lights on them to warn boats of their location in the darkness.

Trolley Pass

Last summer, I found this trolley pass and holder at a flea market, and had to have it. The pass was valid for the twenty-second week of 1945 (May 27 - June 2) and the pass was for the The Milwaukee Electric Railway & Transit Company, from the abbreviation at the bottom. The holder is a bit of a mystery, as a quick search didn't bring up any results for Waldheim Brothers. Someone had also scratched off the years of membership, but I think I'll be able to figure them out with a little work.

Snow Light

It's been a while since we've seen a heavy snow. The forecast has some showers coming over the next week. Perhaps we'll get a chance to "enjoy" winter once or twice more before it's over.

McKinley Marina

The boats are currently all ashore, but in the summer, the berths at McKinley Marina will be full, and the boats will be sailing both inside and outside of the breakwater.

Foreclosed

The minarets of the Oriental Theatre will remain, but the owner may soon change. The current owners are facing a foreclosure action to seize the building and two others.
