The Tall Ships made a visit to Discovery World this summer as part of a tour of the Great Lakes.

Retrospective: Blue Angels

The Blue Angels performed at the 2010 Air and Water Show at the lakefront. The weather almost kept them from performing, but they were able to get the show in just before a thunderstorm rolled in.

Holy Hill

Northwest of Milwaukee, the Holy Hill Basilica sits on a peak and is visible from a wide area. I was driving in the area today, and in the hazy sun, I had to pull over and take today's photo.

I spent the evening at the Bradley Center and the Bucks game. One major improvement at the arena this fall was the replacement of the scoreboard with a newer, larger, high-definition model. The video boards were very nice, and the readability of stats and scores was much better than the old one.

Retrospective: PGA

A look back on some of the events of 2010 between now and the new year. Today's photo is from the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, where a couple large sand sculptures greeted everyone at the main gate.

Lake Effect

Christmas night brought a brief but heavy snow shower off the lake, adding a certain charm to the evening.

Have a great Christmas.

Black Cat

The cat sculpture in the back yard is up to his whiskers in the snow, waiting for the spring thaw.

Outdoor Decor

Lights aren't the only things that belong on a tree, and ornaments aren't limited to indoor trees. This one has ornaments made by school kids, and looks great.

To Look A Lot

Last night's snow makes the lights glow just a bit brighter, like these at Cathedral Square Park.

On Board

After the announcement of this weekends big trade, some smaller but important news has come out today. The Brewers have agreed to terms with Craig Counsell, and he'll be back with the team for the 2011 season. The veteran infielder is a fan favorite, having grown up in the suburb of Whitefish Bay.

Tree Lot

This makeshift tree lot on Downer Avenue gives downtowners a chance to pick up a Christmas tree without trekking out to the suburbs.

One from the archives for today's photo. The Admirals and the Bucks both have radio-controlled blimps that fly around the Bradley Center during intermissions, dropping coupons for discounts, free tickets, and special offers.

Lights in the trees downtown - the soft focus makes for a new perspective.

Materials: One large pole, many strings of lights. Instructions: Anchor pole, place lights in a cone-like pattern. Plug lights in.

Wendesday: Christmas Bomb

The unique "P-Nut" delivery system at AJ Bombers is trimmed out for the holidays.

Ma Baensch's

As the advertising slogan says, It won't be a party if you don't invite Ma. Ma Baensch's herring has been a Milwaukee tradition for over 75 years. As a child, I remember the large glass jar sitting next to a plate of crackers, and watching the adults snack away, thinking to myself that they must have been crazy to eat something that smelled like that. As I grew older, I learned to appreciate many of the delicacies that I couldn't understand at a younger age.

Deck The (City) Halls

My annual trip to City Hall today to pay the property taxes gave me a chance to see the Christmas tree in the center of the first floor. Decked out in blue ornaments and LED lights, the decorations were simple and elegant.

Market Day

Sendik's Market on Downer has been a family-owned and run business for five generations, and its reputation in the neighborhood for quality meat and produce is well known. In addition to great products, they also offer top-notch service, as displayed in today's photo.

Santa Cycle Rampage

Today was the 2010 Santa Cycle Rampage, with a couple hundred or so riders making their way across the city dressed in a familiar red outfit. It certainly was a sight to behold all these Santas in one place, and even more interesting to see them riding their bikes!

Sky Watch

The multiple levels of clouds reflect different colors of the sunset.

Thursday, December 9, 2010

More snow on the ground when I got home (late) tonight got me thinking of just a couple months ago when it was warm and green in the backyard. This photo says it all.

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

In the snow, the streetlights seem to take on a higher intensity and the light is reflected from above and below.

The pond in the West Courtyard at Froedtert Hospital is drained and ready for winter. The recent dusting of snow has added a great contrast to the stones.

High Lights

The lights are up all over town, both at ground level and on top of buildings. Today's photo is of the large tree in Cathedral Square in the foreground and a rooftop display in the distance.

Sunday, December 5, 2010

At gyms, schools, and recreation centers all over town, basketball players have migrated indoors from the playgrounds and parking lots to play indoors.

It's Beginning

Last night's first show of the season helped finish off the decorations that are already up, and reminded the rest of us that we need to get things done soon.

Hot Mess

I've talked about Cafe Hollander before, but I haven't posted a photo from their Wauwatosa location until today. This delicious bowl of breakfast is the Hot Mess, a combination of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, and a cheese sauce that is a great morning meal.

Tonight, I was fortunate to attend a Champagne tasting and class at Cuvee. Specializing in sparkling wines and champagnes, the third-floor space is warm and inviting. This riddling rack is like those used in the making of bubbly, the bottles gradually turned and changed from a slight to sharp angle.
