Founded in 1896, the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company provided transportation and electrical power to the area, and its interurban transit lines ran west as far as East Troy. Eventually, the company would become part of the Wisconsin Electric Company, now known as WE Energies. This building, on Wells Street and the Milwaukee River, was once a powerhouse, using the river to generate electricity. Today, it is used as a performance space by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.
